Medicine Hat Secures Second Lowest Residential Property Tax in Survey

Published on January 12, 2010

Medicine Hat, Alberta – January 11,2010- Medicine Hat remains at a cost advantage by securing the second lowest residential property tax amongst 20 Canadian cities; results were based on the 2009 Residential Property Taxes and Utility Charges survey, released by the City of Edmonton Planning and Development Department.

Annually, the City of Edmonton conducts a survey of property taxes and utility charges for an average, single-detached house; the single-detached house is defined as a twenty-five to thirty-years-old, single-detached, three-bedroom bungalow with a main floor area of 1,200 square feet, a double car garage and finished full basement, on a 6,000 square-foot lot located in an average neighborhood of the city.  This year, twenty Canadian cities and eight municipalities, in the Edmonton region (excluding Edmonton) were surveyed, amongst the results sunny Medicine Hat ranked second lowest in property tax and median property tax of the single detached house, and third lowest for total property and business taxes per person, and total property tax and utility charges of the sample house. The Economic Development Alliance (EDA) recognizes the competitive advantage Southeast Alberta has, and finds these results showcase our reasonable property taxes and low-cost utility rates, making us a good choice to reside and do business in. The Economic Development Alliance of Southeast Alberta (EDA) is a non-profit organization funded by the City of Medicine Hat, the Towns of Bow Island and Redcliff and the Counties of Cypress and Forty Mile. The EDA provides relevant industry knowledge and support to six key sectors; alternate energy, oil and gas, agriculture, technology and advanced manufacturing. Our goal is to position Southeast Alberta as the centre for regional economic growth through collaborative partnerships, industry growth and diversification and increasing the awareness of opportunities in our region.   For more information on this study or for information on services offered through the EDA contact us at 403- 488- 7015, info@edalliance.ca , or visit www.edalliance.ca
