Invasive Plants of Natural Environment
A Workshop on Identification, Control and Management of Leafy Spurge

Strengthening Southeast Alberta’s agriculturally rich region, Leafy Spurge/Invasive Weed Workshop addresses industry topic. Persistent in nature, with an ability to regenerate from small pieces of root; Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia Esula) is extremely difficult to eradicate. On March 04, 2010 at the Cypress County Office, from 10:00 A.M to 3:30 P.M, Lisa Surber from Montana State University, will present information on the real threat of uncontrolled expansion.   A naturalized herb that grows across southern Canada, Surber, along with organizations such as:  Alberta Agriculture, Sustainable Resource Development, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and Alberta Environment will touch basis on topics surrounding the Alberta Weed Control Act, Regulations and Responsibilities, Public Lands Policy, Sustainable Resource Development and Bio-Control Measures.   Leafy Spurge is a deep-rooted perennial weed that was introduced as an adorning or crop seed contaminant in the early 1800’s. Standing approximately 2-2.5 inches in height, this plant contains a milky white latex that can irritate the skin of livestock and humans, resulting in blisters and swelling, spread of leafy spurge can reduce grass production by up to 75% in infested fields.   This seminar is sponsored by the Economic Development Alliance of Southeast Alberta, along with Alberta Environmentally Sustainable Agriculture Program, the County of Forty Mile No. 8, and Cypress County. There is no cost to attend and deadline to register is February 26th, 2010.
