Twenty-seven business visitations were conducted during the months of May and June to Southeast Alberta businesses in the Advanced Manufacturing and Oil and Gas Sectors. The primary goal of the business visitations was to assist existing companies expand or diversify their businesses. A secondary goal was to identify companies with an interest in locating to the region or seeking to partner with an existing business. The EDA has interest in developing the emerging Alternative Energy sector. Specifically, the EDA has interest in identifying opportunities for the region in the area of solar energy, given the positive attributes of the region and the increasing interest among municipalities and residents in utilizing solar energy. Spurring the interest in solar is also the fact that within Canada, the solar resource potential is generally concentrated in the southern part of the country. In fact, according to the Ontario Sustainable Energy Association, the very best potential is concentrated around southeast Alberta, southern Saskatchewan and in the southern half of the remaining Prairie Provinces. Many of the businesses in the sector have been located in the region for generations, first attracted to the region by the sunny climate and low natural gas prices. Read more
Agriculture Impact Assessment

The Economic Development Alliance of Southeast Alberta (EDASA) is located in the southeast portion of Alberta and contains the County of Forty Mile, Cypress County as well as a number of communities within the counties. The area, primarily from conventional agriculture and a greenhouse industry in the Town of Redcliff, is a large agricultural income generator. In early 2004 EDASA, wishing to gain a better understanding of the agricultural impact in the area and also search for opportunities to increase this impact, commissioned an Agricultural Impact Assessment. This assessment, based largely on 2001 Census of Agriculture data, was completed in May 2004. In mid 2007, coinciding with the release of the 2006 Census of Agriculture, EDASA requested an update of the assessment. The update is the subject of this report. Read more

MDA's surveillance service operation begins in Afghanistan

MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates has announced that MDA has conducted its first Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) flight in Afghanistan on January 1, 2009. Flight operations are now underway from the Kandahar Airfield for the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND). Read more
